In Memory of Mac O'Neil

About Mac

James “Mac” McPherson O’Neil passed away on February 16, 2024 at the age of 24. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, quiet humor and a gentleness that touched the lives of all who knew him.

One of Mac’s greatest passions was war history. Like all men, he spent a lot of time thinking about the Roman Empire, but his most recent interest was the Byzantine Empire as well as “intoxicated Hellenistic war elephants.” Mac possessed an insatiable curiosity for the past, spending countless hours immersing himself in the stories of those who came before him. His knowledge of military campaigns, strategies, and historical figures was extensive, and he eagerly shared his insights with anyone who would listen.

But it was his relationship with his father that truly stood out as something special. Their bond transcended the traditional father-son dynamic; they were best friends, confidants, and kindred spirits. Together, they shared a love for the quirky things in life that strengthened their connection and created countless cherished memories. They loved to explore the outdoors together with their furry family Lobo and Poppy. Mac’s deep love of animals was a reflection of his kind and compassionate heart for those who don’t have a voice. In particular, he shared a tender bond with Bobby, a rescued arctic fox at his sister’s exotic animal sanctuary. Who could’ve imagined the bond these two quickly formed and the palpable joy everyone around them experienced when Mac and Bobby met.

Mac’s true essence lay in his kindness. He was a gentle giant who fought to find his place in the world. He recently started work with the American Conservation Experience (ACE) program and was gaining a beautiful confidence as he moved toward his goal of working in the outdoors, possibly as a wildlife ranger in Alaska.

Though his time with us was far too brief, Mac leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and whimsy that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him during his journey through life.

In honoring Mac’s memory, please consider donating to Exotic Pet Wonderland, which helps care for exotic animals in need like Bobby the arctic fox, whom Mac loved so much.

About Bobby the Arctic Fox

In 2022, Bobby the arctic fox was found roaming a suburban neighborhood in Chattanooga after spending several months alone in the woods. He started his life as someone’s pet, but was rehomed when he became “too much.” His new owner was not all that interested in caring for him either and when Bobby escaped, nobody bothered to look for him. When Bobby was found, he was severely emaciated and had nails that were several inches long. Despite all of this, he was still thrilled to meet new people and just happy to be around.

Truly the friendliest arctic fox on the planet, the moment he saw Mac–a complete stranger–Bobby started screaming in joy because he wanted to make a new friend. Mac had never met an arctic fox before, and the connection between the two was instant. Bobby has been in quarantine due to bullying from other foxes, and Mac’s goal was to help find a way to upgrade the existing arctic fox enclosure so that Bobby could return to his old social group.

Mac would text me (his sister, one of Bobby’s caregivers) several times a week asking about him and what he could do to help his little buddy out. So, in memory of Mac, please consider a donation to help with the renovation of the arctic fox enclosure at Exotic Pet Wonderland, which will be named in his honor.
